I personally feel that the launch of the budget Pixel 3 Lite is a very good move on Google's part and it may just prove to be the booster shot that Google needs to improve the sales of its Pixel brand of smartphones.

In this article, I will share my thoughts on this topic and will also try to analyse how can Google go wrong with this launch.

Google Pixel 3 Lite

Google Pixel 3 & 3 XL was the most leaked smartphone of 2018. We all knew what Google was going to launch, much before Google actually launched it.

Google Pixel 3 & 3 XL FAQ

Thanks to all the leaks and an incremental upgrade over the Pixel 2 & 2 XL, the Pixel 3 series was met with lukewarm response from the consumers. Here in India, thanks to sky-high prices, the Pixel 3 and 3 XL have fared very poorly, even more so than the iPhones by Apple.

Pixel 3 & 3 XL not worth buying in India!

The rumored Google Pixel 3 Lite, like its expensive siblings has also started leaking in all its glory. We not only have its specifications but also its leaked images in comparison with other devices.

Pixel 3 Lite - A Good Move

The Pixel smartphone lineup has been Google's attempt to release premium Android smartphones and replicate the success of Apple.

However, ever since its launch a couple of years back, it has failed to connect with the consumers in the way Google had hoped. They had thought that the pure android experience straight from Google, with guaranteed 2-3 software updates would drive the Android users to its devices in huge numbers.

However, that thought has backfired as people are still not buying the Pixel devices much.

Google failed to understand that the majority of the Android user-base uses cheaper smartphones. That is the only reason they are on the Android platform in the first place. The fact that they can buy a smartphone in Rs 10,000 in India is whats important to them. They don't care about the stock android experience.

This is the reason Pixel Smartphones have failed to gain the desired popularity.

However, one thing that the Pixel smartphones have definitely become popular for is their camera. Thanks to a solid camera, and heaps of praises done by YouTubers, everyone is aware of the awesome camera capabilities of the Pixel smartphones.

People in India, and around the world, prefer decently priced smartphones. This is quite evident from the stupendous success of OnePlus brand. OnePlus smartphones have always been successful and the OnePlus 6 & 6T this year have broken all previous records for the company.

This is also the reason why the Nexus Smartphones were so popular.

Hence, IMO, it is a good move by Google to launch a budget Pixel 3 lite, directly competing with the likes of OnePlus and flagship Xiaomi phones. As is evident from the leaked specifications, the Google Pixel 3 Lite has mid range specifications in comparison to OnePlus 6T but thanks to the same camera as its flagship siblings, it will attract many prospective OnePlus and Xiaomi customers towards itself.

Pixel 3 Lite - What can go bad?

The only way this smartphone can fail is if Google shoots itself in its foot by pricing it higher than OnePlus and Xiaomi flagships.

Currently OnePlus and Xiaomi flagships retail anywhere from 35,000 - 40,000 Rs. In India, this price range seems to be the maximum people are willing to spend currently. This is quite evident from the success of smartphones in this price range like OnePlus 6, Asus Zenfone 5Z and Honor 10.

If Google is able to launch the Pixel 3 lite in this price range, then it should be a pretty attractive option for many.

Also, as per current rumors, the Pixel 3 Lite is expected to launch with 32 GB internal storage. Though this much storage is enough, the fact that the competition offers 64 GB and even 128 GB internal storage is enough to put off prospective customers.

Hence, I think Google should price the 32 GB variant as aggressively as possible and also launch a 64 GB variant.

India can be a huge market for this budget phone and Google needs to nail it with its pricing if and when it launches this device.

Final Thoughts

The Google Pixel smartphones are known for their amazing smartphone cameras and the Pixel 3 Lite is a good move by Google to offer the same camera experience for a cheaper price.

After the consistently dismal sales of its premium models, ever since its launch, the budget model might just lead to a boost in sales that the Pixel lineup needs right now. It may give the Pixel hardware team a new confidence and may force them to rethink the pricing strategy of their premium models.

Google will have to be very aggressive in its pricing, especially in India. If they price it right, they might have a winner on their hands. But if they fail to price it aggressively, they will have another flop and their Pixel brand will fall into a deeper abyss.

What do you think?

Do you agree that the Pixel 3 Lite is a good move by Google?
