OnePlus 6T - The Google Pixel 3 & 3XL Killer! | Tech Talks

OnePlus took the wraps off its latest device - The OnePlus 6T, yesterday (October 29th, 2018) at an event in New York.

Thanks to all the leaks, and my predictions based on previous OnePlus launches, I had already predicted what the company would announce. I have already covered all the FAQs about the device in a separate in-depth article.

You can read my OnePlus 6T Complete FAQ article here!

In this article, I want to share my opinions about this device and why I think it is a Google Pixel 3 & 3 XL killer!

OnePlus 6T - The Incremental Upgrade

Every year Oneplus launches a T variant of its flagship device. And 2018 has been no different. It has launched the much leaked and anticipated OnePlus 6T.

Though I have shared the detailed FAQ of the device (link above), let's check out what new features the device offers to the users.

  • OnePlus 6T offers a smaller waterdrop notch design screen. Even the bottom chin is slightly smaller which allows OnePlus to fit a 6.4-inch screen in the same body size as the OnePlus 6.
  • OnePlus 6T removes the fingerprint scanner from the back and embeds it in the display.

  • OnePlus 6T also comes with a larger 3700 mAh for improved battery life.
  • It also comes with a new Night Mode camera and portrait lighting effects (these are expected to be rolled out to OnePlus 6 as well).
  • The device also removes the Headphone jack.
  • OnePlus 6T costs the same as the initial starting price of OnePlus 6 but now comes with 128 GB internal storage as the base variant.

OnePlus 6T vs Asus Zenfone 5Z - Specs Comparison

As can be seen, the one plus 6T, though not a significant improvement, is an incremental but useful upgrade. And with the starting price staying almost the same as the OnePlus 6, it offers an alternative option to users who may be interested.

OnePlus has always been considered as a flagship killer, and with the OnePlus 6T, this statement couldn't be truer.

At the price that OnePlus 6T retails for, it offers a lot of bang for the buck! It definitely gives a tough competition to more premium flagship smartphones and gives them a run for their money.

OnePlus 6T - Google Pixel 3 Killer!

One thing that I have been surprised with for a long time is the fact that OnePlus has always been projected as the iPhone Killer. This is such a strange comparison because both devices run completely different operating systems and have a different ecosystem.

A comparison with iPhones can only be based on OS and ecosystem.

What most Tech Critics and Youtubers fail to do is compare OnePlus devices to other Android smartphones. Even those who do, don't do a fair job.

I personally believe that the OnePlus 6T is the Google Pixel 3 killer!

Android Experience

Google Pixel devices are often said to offer the purest Android experience. I, however, differ from this statement.

In my opinion, pure android is AOSP code of Android OS that Google submits under open source license online for its partners to use. The version of Android, that Google ships on the pixel smartphones, is Google's customised version of the pure Android.

Pixel's Android skin favours Google Search and its other services heavily unlike pure Android.

And unfortunately, Google isn't great at shipping a great software experience. Yes, it does have great web services in which it has invested a lot of time and resources over the last many years. But when it comes to Operating system, it's just not able to optimise it properly.

And Pixel 3 is the best example. The previous pixel smartphones too have been marred with bugs and issues but with its third generation device, it was expected that the Pixel 3 would have a bug free launch, at least on the software front. But as many articles and youtube videos have shown, that is simply not the case!

As with the older generation, the Pixel 3 has had lots of issues and bugs which just keep propping up with every passing day.

Is this the most premium Android experience most tech critics and Youtubers rave about?

On the other hand, OnePlus actually uses pure Android and creates its own custom ROM, the Oxygen OS, which is faster, more fluid and bug-free than the Pixel skin of Android. Even bug fixes and feature updates are rolled out faster to Oxygen OS.

Don't trust me? Even Marques Brownlee (MKBHD) thinks so, who considers himself a pure android lover and a pixel fan.

With Oxygen OS, OnePlus gives its users the same Android experience, that Google promotes as Pure Android on its Pixel smartphones. But OnePlus does it much better than what Google is able to do.

And it's disappointing because Google has been releasing Android for a decade now. OnePlus only started 5 years back and built Oxygen OS 3 years back.

The Camera

The only thing Google Pixel smartphones are known for is their camera.

Thanks to their machine learning expertise, Google has been able to implement computational photography in their cameras which delivers great quality images in any lighting condition.

However, as many camera tests have revealed, OnePlus has come a long way and its OnePlus 6 is delivering quite close results, if not better, than the Pixel 3 camera. And with the OnePlus 6T having the same setup but improved algorithms, one can only expect the OnePlus camera to inch even closer to the pixel camera.

Recently, the Pixel 3 announced that it would get a dedicated Night mode for better low light photos. And with the OnePlus 6T, OnePlus has also announced a similar mode called NightScape. So both are running after similar features.

And if you really need the Google camera experience, there are modded apps of the Pixel 3 camera available for OnePlus 6 and 6T. These are basically the original pixel 3 camera apps, modified slightly to run bug-free on OnePlus devices. The actual image processing algorithms remain the same, and they give almost the same image quality on your OnePlus 6 & 6T, as on the Pixel 3.

Apart from the above two features, most of the functionality is common between the two smartphones:

Areas where Pixel 3 Excels are:

  • An IP rating for dust and water protection. OnePlus 6T is only splash resistant.
  • Dual stereo speakers.
  • Wireless Charging
  • Faster and Longer Android updates

Areas, where OnePlus 6T excels, are:
  • Bigger battery life
  • Faster charging
  • Dual Sim Support
  • 128 GB Internal storage base model
  • Cheaper starting price
  • Better design

Both don't have support for SD card and both don't have a headphone jack!

Final Thoughts

As I have discussed in detail above, it is quite clear that for a lower price, Oneplus 6T offers a much better value for money package.

It has a better Android experience than the Pixel 3. Its camera is almost as good, if not better than the pixel. And it also offers much more practical features that Pixel lacks.

Considering all the features that OnePus 6T offers, the price difference and the overall experience, the Pixel 3 is definitely a tough sell.

Amongst all the other Android devices launched this year, Pixel 3 is considered as the best Android smartphone. But Oneplus 6T is even better!
