Google Pixel 3 & 3XL leaks - My Theory!

I personally feel that the leaks and information we have about the Google Pixel 3 and 3XL is more of a brilliant marketing strategy than uncontrolled leaks. And I have valid reasons to believe this.

Here's my theory on the leaks of Google Pixel 3 & 3XL.

We all are aware that Google incorporated the HTC hardware division to get more smartphone building expertise in-house. However, it was not able to create a device that could match the design and looks of the flagships already out in the market.

Its efforts yielded a device that not only looked ugly but lacked any standout features to attract the buyers.

If Google had unveiled the 2 lacklustre pixel devices directly in its 9th October event, it would have gotten really bad press and even worse sales than before. Pixel smartphones haven't really been a money maker for Google and bad press for 2018 pixel devices would have meant game over for Google.

  • By leaking the design of the upcoming pixel devices, Google took a risk which worked. As expected, Google got bad press for the design, but that bad press died down over time and users got used to seeing the ugly notch in the leaked renders. So when Google launches the actual device on 9th October, it won't face as bad a backlash.

  • By constantly leaking some information or the other, Google kept improving the overall perception about the Google devices. For example, the leakers said the camera is the best, the screen is as good as iPhone X or even the haptic feedback is just like the iPhone X. Such leaks tried to successfully minimise the negative impact of the notch.

  • By showing the leaked unboxing, Google showed that would be shipping earbuds now which again made a positive impact.

  • And of course, who can forget the Pixel 3 Ultra hype. Leaking renders that looked like a Pixel 3 Ultra, Google kept the tech community excited and waiting to be surprised.

Reasons that support my theory!

If you look at how the Pixel 3 details have been leaked, you will find a pattern. Every time the tech YouTubers, bloggers and critics stopped talking about the pixel 3 devices, a new leak happened.

  • The leaks started with the design that was sure to draw the ire of tech enthusiasts and users alike. Hence it was leaked months before so that the negativity could die down. Then the positive aspects started to leak.

  • When almost everything was revealed, Google played the Pixel 3 Ultra card. Asking YouTubers for footage where they criticise the notch was a brilliant move. This confused the tech community to no end and kept the Pixel 3 in the news.

  • With Google owning the Search and YouTube, it's hard to believe that they couldn't stop users from posting content about the Pixel 3. If the device had actually leaked, they could have stopped users from posting articles, or youtube videos about it on the internet. They didn't!

Final Thoughts

With the Pixel 3 & 3Xl, Google has shown the world a new style of marketing strategy. They purposefully leaked information about their upcoming devices.

Their strategy, what I feel, was to tone down the bad press for the design by the time the device launches. They also wanted to stay in the news and hence the consistent flow of information.

And they succeeded. YouTube and the Internet are flooded with content related to the Pixel 3 and 3XL. Users are now accustomed to the notch on the Pixel 3 XL. And now when the device launches, Google can WOW them with a few software tricks, which it will surely unveil.

What we can learn from this is that even if you don't have a great product, you can sell it by marketing it well.
