Google Pixel 3 - best camera smartphone 2018? | Tech Talks

Despite being almost a year old, Google Pixel 2 is still one of the best camera smartphones one can buy today. Its really amazing how Google Pixel 2 camera handily beats the likes of Samsung and iPhone, both having a dual camera setup, with just a single camera.

It just goes on to prove the awesome work Google has done with its machine learning algorithms that churn out DSLR like image quality from a small single camera sensor.

And with the Google Pixel 3 launch just around the corner, there is little to no doubt that Google will exceed the camera performance of the previous generation pixel device. The image quality of the Google Pixel 3 camera will be second to none and will once again set new benchmarks in smartphone photography.

In this post, I will share 5 reasons, why I think the Google Pixel 3 will be the best camera smartphone of 2018.

Improved Auto HDR+

Google has been hard at work on its machine learning powered auto HDR+ mode for a long time.

Since the days of Nexus devices, the Google camera app has had this mode. However, due to low powered processors and unfinished algorithms, it never really posed any competition to the established players like Samsung and Apple.

But with the first generation pixel devices, the HDR+ mode really came into its own with a stellar performance, which was bested only by its successor, the Pixel 2 and 2 XL.

Now, almost a year later, we can definitely expect that Google would have improved the HDR+ algorithms even further to deliver even better image processing that yields stellar images.

Second Generation Pixel Visual Core

Last year, Google added a small custom core to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chip, which powered their smartphones - The Pixel 2 and 2 XL. This custom core, named Pixel Visual Core, was mainly aimed to provide additional processing power for the ISP or Image Signal Processor.

The main aim of the Pixel Visual Core was to further enhance the image quality of the pictures obtained from the Pixel 2 camera. It did this by recognizing the scene that was being shot, as well as, aiding in the proper and optimized execution of HDR+ algorithms.

With this year Pixel 3 devices, expect the second generation Pixel Visual Cores to make an appearance on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, used on these devices. These second-gen cores will be much more prominent and powerful than last year and may come with enhanced capabilities.

With Super Slo-Mo video mode making an appearance on many smartphone cameras this year, I expect this chip to aid the Google Pixel 3 to bring this feature to the pixel devices.

Also, it will also enable the pixel 3 camera to even more amazing portrait shots with flawless edge detection.

New and Improved Image Sensor

With almost all smartphones cameras using newer, bigger and more efficient camera sensors this year, expect Google to follow suit.

Google has been marketing its pixel devices in the premium segment mainly based on their stellar camera performances. And it makes complete sense for them to use the latest and the greatest sensor available to take that performance a notch higher.

With Mid-range devices like OnePlus 6 really catching up with the premium smartphones in the camera department, Google would want to increase its lead manifold.

Better and Wider Lens

With the Pixel 2, Google finally incorporated a wide open (f/1.8) lens that was optically stabilized. This really helped it a lot in the amazing images it was able to produce.

But competition has moved forward since then. Most camera smartphones are using a f/1.7 lens or better. Even Samsung has this year upped the game with f/1.5 aperture lens.

Though nothing is confirmed as yet, it won't be a surprise if Google opts for an ever wider lens for the cameras on this year's pixel smartphones.

We can also expect an improved OIS for the lens which will help Google Pixel 3 take even better low light shots and images as well as improve the already amazing video stabilization.

Dual Front Cameras

With all the leaks and unboxing videos showing that the Google Pixel 3 has 2 cameras at the front, this news is all but confirmed.

Though the primary usage of these 2 cameras seems to be for 3D face recognition (secure face unlock) and improved portrait selfies (which were already amazing), expect the HDR+ magic with data from both the sensors to yield even amazing selfies.

Though I am only speculating this, it would be really amazing if the second lens is a wide angled lens for those amazing group selfies.

Final Thoughts

There is no doubt in the fact that the Google Pixel 3 and 3 XL will be the best smartphone cameras when they are launched in October 2018 (rumored launch date is 4th October 2018).

The 5 reasons I have mentioned above are enough to make then stand out from the crowd of smartphones, at least in terms of camera performance (The notch pulls it back in the same league as all the other smartphones of 2018).
