We all love using our smartphones a lot. From the moment we wake up to the final moments of our day when our eyes just can't stay open, we are mostly looking at our smartphone screens.

Be it for browsing the web, watching videos or other content, listening to music or reading an ebook, our smartphone screens enjoy the maximum attention of our eyes, even more than our loved ones, unfortunately.

Watching screens for such a long time can definitely have a negative impact on one's eyes, especially if you don't give your eyes a constant break in between.

It has also been found through varies studies that viewing the smartphone screens at night does affect the sleep cycle of people.

The screen backlight is normally a white light which also has blue light as a component. This blue light is found to have affected sleep cycles as it prevents sleep-inducing hormones to be secreted. Hence, having a blue light filter on the screen during night time can definitely help.

Now, to be honest, it not a complete solution! But it definitely is a step in the right direction and does help quite a bit.

Apple made this feature popular by introducing the Night Shift mode in iOS. And now many smartphones already have this feature built in. But there are still many smartphones that still don't have this feature natively.

If you don't have this feature on your android smartphone, worry not. The apps I am going to share will help you achieve this feature with ease on your smartphone.

So let's get started!

Twilight is one of the popular blue light filter apps right now. Hence it is featured at the top of my list.

It is brilliant at filtering out the flux of the blue light from your smartphone screens. There are various settings that allow you to setup twilight to automatically adapt your device's display to the time of the day.

You can set the app up to start curbing the blue light from your smartphone screen as the sun sets and increase its intensity with every passing hour. Or you can simply set your own custom time.

You can also manually set the color temperature, the intensity of the filter and screen dimming of the display. There’s also an option to create custom profiles so that you can set custom filters for a specific time.

The app is free to download and use. However, the free version only lets you create a couple of profiles. If you want more profiles along with advanced features like the ability to adjust transition time for sunset and sunrise, you can buy the Pro version of the app.

Night Shift - Blue Light Filter for Migraine

This is one of the most highly rated night mode apps on the Android Play store. Like all other apps, it also curbs the blue light coming from your android smartphone by applying a filter over the screen.

There are some custom pre-configured profiles that you can start manually or schedule to be started at a specific time.

Whats great about this app is that, unlike many other similar apps, it is very lightweight. The app itself does not occupy much storage space and is light on resources to ensure a lag-free performance of the device throughout.

This is another app that helps users get night mode feature (blue light filter) on their smartphones. What's unique about this app is that it reduces the brightness of the screen to extremely low levels which helps at night.

Also, you can have multiple color filters. You can either have a red filter or its slightly varying shades of red.

If you use tasker app, this app also has built-in support for it to change profiles automatically based on time, location etc.

I hope all these apps will be useful to you as they have been to me. If you face any issues, let me know in the comments below. If you know of any other app that is great and I should include in this list, do let me know in the comments.
