Portrait Mode on all Smartphones | Tech Tips

portrait mode on any smartphone

Ever since Apple introduced Dual Camera portrait mode on its iPhone 7 plus smartphone, the trend of portrait photo has become a rage amongst the consumers.

And smartphone manufacturers are more than happy to provide the consumers with dual cameras and portrait photo mode.

This feature is not just reserved for expensive smartphones but have also made its way to almost all budget smartphones.

But if you own the latest budget smartphone or a mid-range smartphone, you may have noticed that this mode doesn't really work that well.

Majority of the time, the edge detection is not great and some manufacturers apply a blurring algorithm that looks outright fake.

Now You don't need to worry!

If the Portrait mode on your smartphone does not work well then you can just capture a regular image and use an app to convert it to portrait photo.

This app works really well and is very good at detecting edges and blurring the background beautifully.

It also provides you the option to have a paintbrush to additionally blur backgrounds or remove blur backgrounds which its amazing algorithm may have missed.

You can also adjust the intensity of the blur.

This app is the PICSART app. It's a cross-platform app and available both on android and IOS.

After the image is loaded into the editor you need to click on the effects button in the bottom row. After clicking that a new section opens where they are multiple effects.

You need to select either blur or lens blur. I personally use lens blur more.

Select the lens blur option and you are greeted with a few options. You can reduce the luminosity and increase or decrease the blur effect.

You can see that after selecting the lens blur the whole image becomes Blurred. Now you have to select the eraser icon on the top.

This opens a new section where there is an icon on the bottom that resembles Human figure click on it.

What it does is that it detects a portrait in the photo and then removes the blur from it while keeping the blur on the background.

Usually, the algorithm used by picsart is very good in detecting the edges of The Portrait, however, if there is a lot going on in the background then the edge detection might not be perfect.

In that case, you can use the brush icon or eraser icon to remove or add blur to wherever you like.

After everything is done you can click the check button to save it and finally the right arrow mark button to go to the final screen where you have the option to save it to your gallery.

Things to keep in Mind

So, in this way you can convert any image into a portrait image using picsart app, however, there are some caveats or things to keep in mind before using this

The Portrait icon in the eraser tool only works if the photo has a person standing inside it. It does not work on other objects.

Sometimes it also happens that you may have a person standing in your image but he may not have his face towards the camera in that case also the algorithm might not detect a portrait inside the photo and may not offer this feature.

But in a majority of the cases this works flawlessly has have tried multiple times myself this should really help those who are not able to get a good portrait shot from their existing smartphone cameras who have old smartphones which do not have a portrait mode built in.

Try this app and let me know if you face any problems.
